Hangar
The Hangar sits on historic ground. Thunderbird Field, once a World War II pilot training center, was built in 1941 and famously formed the shape of a thunderbird when viewed from the sky. Over the decades the property has taken on many lives, and PB Bell Development designed its multifamily project on Thunderbird Road to meet the neighborhood’s growing housing needs while honoring the site’s past. With a historic aviation theme, The Hangar pays tribute to its roots through expansive public spaces that flow together and wrap around the outdoor pool and amenities. Interior architectural details begin at the entry with dropped wood ceilings that add warmth to the clean, cool interiors, a feature repeated throughout to reinforce scale and function. The interior design draws inspiration from the classic bomber jacket, creating a warm, textured atmosphere that feels comfortably worn and effortlessly stylish.

Technology drives the leasing experience with an Engrain touch screen embedded in a walk-up counter for easy, interactive engagement. This connection space lets the leasing team begin the process informally, while an attached desk supports more formal conversations and allows a single agent to adapt to each client’s needs. Leather-wrapped, scale-patterned tiles finish the desk base, and propeller-inspired modern lighting spins overhead to add movement and style. A soft seating lounge with a beverage bar completes the setting, offering multiple opportunities for comfortable, welcoming interactions.
Our design team replaced the typical community room fireplace with a striking media tower to maximize the resident experience. Wrapped in custom textured tile, the monolithic form anchors the space. Wood ceilings and concrete floors give the room a masculine, intentional feel, while a massive Turkish rug with tribal and ethnic patterns softens the atmosphere. Basket pendant lights drop from above to bring the scale down to a more intimate level. The furnishings complete the story—a mix of brutalist chairs, farm tables, steel trunks, and stone stools. A salvaged aviation wing and engine rings were transformed into sculptural art, creating a curated collection that adds individuality and character to a space that is both relaxing and engaging.
Linking the mailroom with the business center encourages daily interaction among residents. Inside, The Hangar offers impressive workspaces alongside interior mail and parcel services. A beverage bar, conference table, and comfortable lounge create a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere. Along the perimeter, a series of work pods are programmed for different needs: a “play pod” with a game and conference table overlooking the lively club room, a “connect pod” with lounge seating for casual conversations, a “focus pod” with individual desks oriented away from distractions for concentrated work, and a “meet pod” with a full conference room designed for executive-level meetings.

The Hangar offers expansive outdoor covered spaces as an extension of the resident clubhouse. Warm wood ceilings carry from the interior to the exterior, adding architectural character to the open-air setting. An outdoor fireplace, TV, and comfortable lounge look out over the dramatic pool, while gaming tables and interactive sculpture bring a playful energy. An outdoor dining area with a BBQ and pizza oven anchors the corner, creating a cozy spot for evening meals and weekend gatherings.
